More and more people are getting diagnosed with sleep disorders each year. Even without a diagnosed disorder, many people experience difficulty falling or staying asleep. This will end up having many negative impacts on our health. Sleep expert and author Matthew Walker of Why We Sleep states that, “Without sleep, there is low energy and disease. With sleep, there is vitality and health.” The problem is that most of our solutions for this problem are just quick fixes that do not address the cause of the real underlying problem. In this article we will discuss the importance of sleep in overall health and how to find a natural solution for better sleep.

Understanding The Relationship Between Chiropractic Care and Rest

It is important to note that sleep disturbances can come from many causes. An obvious cause when discussing a chiropractors role in better health, is pain management. Pain can keep us from sleeping and contribute to restlessness. A less obvious cause, happens to be the biggest reason for sleepless nights, which is high stress levels. Stress puts our body’s nervous system (control center) in a “Sympathetic State” which essentially means “fight or flight mode.”

It can be better visualized as the gas pedal of our body. The gas pedal is useful when we are trying to work out. It also comes in handy during a stressful situation when we need more focus or a quick burst of energy. It can become problematic when the gas pedal gets stuck on. This is called sympathetic dominance.

This sympathetic dominance is when the brake pedal of the body is forgotten. The brake pedal is a branch of our nervous system called the “Parasympathetic State.” This is where we rest, digest, and heal. This is the most important factor in whether or not we get good sleep at night.

The Connection Between Spinal Health and Sleep Quality

Chiropractors focus on the spine and more importantly the nervous system. The nervous system is the master control center of the body and has the largest impact on our sleep. A chiropractor will assess the health of the spine and nervous system through testing that is unique to each patient. Testing many times includes interview questions and daily lifestyle habits, looking at movement patterns, and discussing stress levels.

Testing will show if there are subluxations, (misalignments), which create neurologic dysfunction in the body. These misalignments may cause the body to be stuck in sympathetic dominance, which is the gas pedal of the body. It is important to note that nervous system dysfunction or subluxations, can be present without symptoms. Just like a cavity does not always cause pain. Spinal dysfunction does not always cause pain.

Our goal as chiropractors is to detect and correct spinal misalignments so that the nervous system can function optimally. This will allow the body to “find the brake pedal again.” This typically results in a less stressful state and a way to get better sleep.

Common Sleep Disorders and Their Impact

    • Insomnia – difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

    • Sleep Apnea – a condition characterized by breathing difficulty during sleep that results in sleep interruptions and awakening.

    • Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) – uncomfortable leg sensations that can feel like tingling or numbness and can disrupt sleep.

These are a few of the most common sleep disorders that we see impact people in Austin, Texas. Typically we find that these conditions might respond well to medication, but can come with many side effects. For this reason, people are searching for natural solutions to improve sleep.

Exploring the Role of Chiropractic Adjustments in Sleep Disorders Management

Chiropractic adjustments provide a natural solution to better sleep. They address the health of the nervous system. A healthier spine and nervous system results in less pain and more optimal body function. Some of the most common things our patients notice as the health of their spine and nervous system improves are better sleep, better energy, and improved mood.

Tips for Improving Sleep Naturally

Natural solutions for better sleep are often just as effective as the alternate medical solution but come without many of the harmful side effects of medicine. Below are some of the natural solutions we commonly recommend to our patients for better sleep.

    • Deep Breathing – The goal of this, similar to a chiropractic adjustment, is aimed at altering the nervous system state to a parasympathetic one. This is our body’s “brake pedal” and where we find deep relaxation and rest. A common breathing technique that has been found successful for improved relaxation is inhaling through the nose for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, then exhaling through the mouth for 8 seconds. Repeat for 5 minutes.

    • Turning off Technology 1 hour before bed – the blue light that is put off from screens has been shown to reduce our body’s melatonin (sleep hormone) production. It has also been linked to altering our circadian rhythm. Try turning off technology an hour before bed and instead have a conversation with a loved one, read a book, or relax in silence.

    • Blue Light Glasses – If you must use technology before bed, try using blue light glasses, to reduce the amount of blue light our eyes are exposed to. We recommend these glasses.

Incorporating Chiropractic Techniques into Your Routine

Incorporating chiropractic adjustments into your routine can help induce better sleep, naturally. One of the most important factors in achieving this through chiropractic care is finding the right dose. Just like a supplement or medication, the right dose (frequency of visits) is the single largest contributor to receiving better results through chiropractic care.

To find the right dose of chiropractic adjustments for your body, testing needs to be done. Testing will help determine the right amount of care to achieve your goals. Testing can include a personalized examination, a good case history, or nerve testing.

Generally speaking, the longer an issue has been present in the body, the longer it can take to correct. Early detection and treatment typically results in improved outcomes.

Finding the Right Chiropractor for Your Health Needs

Not all chiropractors are the same. The approach, testing methods, techniques used, and philosophy of care, varies greatly amongst chiropractors. Many chiropractors only focus on pain relief, while others focus on pain relief and long term health optimization.

It is important to note that better sleep is a long term health optimization goal. This is important because this is not something that insurance will cover.

Unfortunately, insurance doesn’t cover long term health optimization. It is typically meant for short term pain relief and symptom management. Just like it doesn’t cover our gym membership or our healthy meal options, it does not cover maintenance care at a chiropractic office.

Over time, paying out of pocket for health services like chiropractic care ends up saving time and money. When we invest in proactive health habits, it has been shown to decrease costs long term and also lead to significantly better health outcomes.

What to Look for When Choosing a Chiropractor for Sleep Improvement

It is important to note if an office is a nervous system focused office when looking for sleep improvement. While any chiropractic adjustment will positively impact the nervous system. Nervous system questioning and testing will ultimately uncover the right root cause of a sleep issue.

When the root cause is determined, the right plan can be recommended. A plan based around symptom management looks wildly different than a plan based on health optimization. Health optimization takes time but can be life changing. As we say in chiropractic, “miracles happen in the plan.”

The hard part is that most chiropractic offices use the same buzz words or marketing terms, making it challenging to determine if they are actually a good fit for what you are looking for. Below is a list of questions we recommend asking to a potential office to determine if they are a good fit to help with long term health optimization like improved sleep.

    • Are you a nervous system focused office?

    • Do you give home recommendations outside of chiropractic adjustments?

    • Is your office more focused on symptom management or long term health optimization (or both)?

    • What do maintenance recommendations look like for your patients?

A chiropractor focused on long term health optimization, beyond pain management, will typically focus on the nervous system and give home recommendations. They will also typically recommend maintenance visits monthly (if not more, based on your lifestyle) to optimize health. This is important because we want to improve health whether symptoms are present or not, and also prevent spinal and nervous system dysfunction from occurring altogether.

Real-Life Success Stories: How Chiropractic Care Transformed Sleep Habits

Lauren came to see us because of lingering back pain and trouble sleeping. She has tried “everything else” according to her. This included many things, even things like Pilates or an anti-inflammatory diet.

When Lauren first came in, she used to “jenga” herself into many sleep positions to try and find a comfortable posuture and did not experience quality sleep. She was waking up in the middle of the night feeling like she was dizzy and fatigued. Now she finds it easy to fall asleep and is experiencing overall better sleep naturally.
