Warning! This page is nerdy and not for the beginner with health. Every other service page is for you to start with. This page is written for and dedicated to all the super nerds out there that desire to take their health to a whole new level. You’re often the ones keeping data on your own health and many times know even more than your doctor when it comes to healthy lifestyle habits that promote longevity and optimal health for years to come. Common health data we track like our sleep, steps, heart rate, nutrition, blood pressure is great to measure “downstream effects.” What we often miss is a measure of the “upstream factors” that govern our systemic health.
The closest thing we get to an “upstream” indicator of health that many people use would be HRV (heart rate variability) or a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) . These are both great! I’ve (Dr. Matt) actually used both for quite some time. HRV in particular is a great measure of how our body is adapting to stress which is the ultimate indicator of a healthy functioning nervous system. While our INSiGHT nerve scans at Lifespring Chiropractic also look at HRV, it’s just one piece of the data we look at. Not to mention, our device is much more in depth, which is definitely reflected in the cost and function of the machine. Our HRV device measures sympathetic tone, vagal tone (which everybody is talking about but nobody is measuring), and more. This allows us to use it more as a depth finder to look at how stress has accumulated in our body over the years which sets us up for a plan to reverse it.
Not all chiropractors take this approach when it comes to health. A nervous system approach means we don’t chase all the sticks in the stream to manage recurring blockages, but rather search upstream for the deeper cause. We do this by measuring the function of the nervous system through our INSiGHT scans. If you can measure it, you can manage it. This is some of the most valuable data to have when it comes to health. It literally is telling us how the most important system in our body is functioning. Measuring the function of the nervous system allows us to come up with a unique plan for people when it comes to health optimization. Below are a few of the top reasons people see us for health optimization.
Performance comes in many forms but uses the same formula in our body. Whether we are talking about athletic performance or job performance, the more we can access in our body, the higher we can perform. Performance is a combination of our energy reserves, our energy efficiency, and how well our brain and our body are communicating. We measure these exact three functions with our nervous system scans. It is amazing what we find “hiding out” like socks under a bed or clothes in a closet, even when the room appears clean at first glance (due to compensation patterns).
This was me (Dr. Matt) and now I get to help so many others with this. Many of your favorite doctors who have written books and gone on to be the best in their fields also had a similar story. Dr. Peter Attia (metabolic syndrome) and Dr. Amy Myers (graves disease), are just a couple notable ones. Stress in its many forms from the foods we eat, our movement habits, to emotional stress, tend to be the driving force behind these conditions.
Nervous system focused chiropractic care restores our body chemistry and affects the brain, altering this stress response/fight or flight we often find people stuck in. Then lifestyle habits are important to reinforce the work. This is why education and teaching will always be part of our process. No amount of chiropractic care is extremely effective without the right lifestyle habits alongside it.
It never gets old when someone says they’ve been to many other chiropractors, tried all the health things, and seen some of the best of the best in the world, then they react after an adjustment like they just saw a UFO flying in the sky. People get excited when they experience the real power of the nervous system. Many traditional style adjustments from chiropractors work by affecting a spinal cord reflex (monosynaptic and disynaptic reflexes) that change the way we feel for a few hours to a few days. Our focus at Lifespring is something deeper. It’s to find what’s called the “primary subluxation.”
This takes a less is more approach, only making three adjustments max to the spine. More than three adjustments to the spine in one visit can create “too much noise” or stimulation in the brain for the body to process. Think about it. The right pace for anything is important. Overdoing it in a workout, overdoing it in a diet plan, or overdoing it in the sauna or ice bath would do more harm than good. Same with a chiropractic adjustment.
When we find the primary subluxation, we affect the nervous system in a profound way, as we’ve seen through our cases when people jump up off the table and ask “what was that?” We affect an area of the brain (through a third order neuron) called the thalamus. This is like the router that touches 98% of all information in the body! Everything except for smell.

I love and hate when a friend texts me asking for a good chiropractor recommendation in their city. One of the hardest things to do (unfortunately) is find a good chiropractor who can help address the root cause of symptoms let alone help with deeper layers of healing. The average adjustment without the right detective work can give some great relief for a short period, but doesn’t address the deeper layers of dysfunction that keep recurring flare ups coming back or contribute to poor sleep or energy.
If you’ve gone to a chiropractor and they’ve done basic x-rays or moved their hand along your spine to see where you’re tight, that is not an indicator of them trying to find the deeper underlying root cause. It’s simply a sign that you are tight. These are signs that don’t tell us much at all by themselves.
Though almost everyone in healthcare is using the phrase “root cause,” very few seem to actually use assessment tools, good problem solving, or technology like INSiGHT scans to understand what the root cause really is. There’s no “one thing” that makes a chiropractor great, but there are a few factors that you should look for.
The good chiropractors believe in (and regularly see) miracles in their offices!
If you’ve made it this far and want to understand why I’m so passionate about this, keep reading. It started with my own health crisis.
My own health journey/obsession was catalyzed after pursuing a natural solution to an autoimmune thyroid diagnosis I received at the age of 26. Rather than taking drugs or surgery I chose lifestyle habits to help my body heal and reverse my diagnosis. It took a year and a half to get to “remission” (though we are never broken or fixed. Health is an ongoing journey).
Nervous system focused chiropractic care was absolutely part of my routine. Now I get to be on the opposite end of things, seeing people heal from miraculous stories or reach new layers of health and performance. We’ve been fortunate to regularly see professional athletes, many famous musicians, and many people from around the world who have traveled to us to look for answers when it comes to health optimization. All the same kind of people. People looking for more. Whether a super nerd like me, or humans without answers looking for more than traditional medicine gave them.
