Calculating...

Let me ask you something strange. If your house caught fire, would you shut off the smoke alarm… or look for the flames?

Exactly.

But when our body sets off its own internal alarm—fatigue, tightness, restless sleep—most of us reach for something to silence it. Caffeine. Painkillers. Distraction. The problem? We didn’t solve the problem. We just unplugged the alarm.

When should you see a chiropractor? Before the fire burns the foundation.

Here’s what no one is saying: Your body doesn’t betray you. It whispers. Then it warns. Then it wails.
If we’re smart, we’ll catch it at the whisper.

What Most Chiropractors Won’t Say (But I Will)

If you asked my colleagues when to see a chiropractor, they’d all nod in agreement: “Anyone with a spine should see a chiropractor.”

While I get it, I don’t fully buy it. We don’t adjust everyone all the time — because not every body needs it. Over half of our customers experience hypermobility and are not good candidates for frequent traditional chiropractic adjustments because of what it could do to their ligaments. But everyone should know when to see the right kind of chiropractor, who can detect the subtle signs that signal to us there is a problem.

Unfortunately, most of us never learn when to take action or how to recognize the body’s subtle whispers before they turn into louder problems.

The Body Always Whispers Before It Screams

You know that weird knot in your back that keeps coming back? Or that low energy crash every afternoon that we chalk up to “just being tired”? Yeah, that’s not random. The body whispers first. Some of the most common whispers are listed below:

• Trouble sleeping—falling asleep or staying asleep
• Afternoon energy slumps
• Craving sweets when you’re not even hungry
• Needing caffeine to feel normal
• Aches and pains that show up often
• Muscle tightness that foam rolling can’t fix
• Popping your own neck or back
• Yawning all day even after sleeping eight hours
• Headaches that show up weekly

These are not normal. These are micro-alarms. We tend to normalize them because they are so common. For example, our friend group might all sleep 6 hours per night, so we think our 6.5 hours of sleep is good even though it’s not enough and will slowly cause dysfunction. If we ignore these subtle whispers long enough, we’ll start hearing the shouts. Some of the most common shouts we see at Lifespring Chiropractic in Austin, Texas are listed below:

• Hormonal imbalances (PCOS, low testosterone)
• Painful or irregular periods
• Chronic joint pain
• Muscle spasms
• Tendonitis
• Anxiety
• Depression

These are not just conditions—they’re the nervous system waving a giant red flag.

Symptoms Are a Smart Response

Yes, you read that right. Symptoms aren’t the enemy—they’re the body’s way of begging for help. Think of a fire alarm. It’s loud, annoying, and even piercing, but it’s also life-saving. Health symptoms we experience work the same way. They are inconvenient, but they’re also intelligent. And yet, we’ve built an entire culture around turning off the alarm, thinking we’ve solved the problem, while we completely ignore the fire. When we understand this, we stop chasing quick fixes that only offer temporary solutions… and start asking the right questions.

A Real Conversation I Overheard on a Plane

Recently, I was on a flight when I overheard a guy talking to someone on the phone. He said his friend went to the doctor because she was “a little under the weather”—low fever, body aches, fatigue. It got me thinking that she most likely had a simple cold or a virus.

A cold or a simple virus where we get a fever rarely, if ever, needs medical intervention. We are designed to heal.

Though no intervention is needed, going to the doctor in our country typically results in a medication such as an NSAID. We tend to normalize the use of over-the-counter and prescription drugs because they are so widely used in our country. We make up only 5% of the global population, yet we consume over 50% of the world’s prescription drugs. Where does this strategy land us in our overall health rating? 46th or 47th!

The consequences of quick convenience

Yes, sometimes prescriptions are necessary, and can even be life-saving. But we’re also overmedicated, often undernourished due to our poor food system, and completely disconnected from what our bodies are trying to tell us. Even “safe” meds like ibuprofen? Just Google it for yourself and you’ll see some of the common side effects include:

• Digestive issues
• Nausea
• Skin reactions like a rash
• Feeling tired or weak

The things that are not often mentioned on the bottle are vitamin and mineral deficiencies such as glutathione (the most important antioxidant in the human body). Also, gut problems like leaky gut, also known as dysbiosis, start or are made worse by over-the-counter or prescription medications. This is especially true when taking antibiotics as they wipe out all of our good bacteria in our gut. That’s the price of short-term comfort. And it’s expensive.

So… When Should You See a Chiropractor?

It depends on your goals. If your only goal is to stop the pain—you wait for the scream. It’s important to note that there are two main categories of chiropractic thought- the traditional one that most people are aware of that deals with pain relief. The other looks at the nervous system and health optimization, which is the core philosophy of what chiropractic was founded on. If we want to avoid the blowout, we need to listen to the whispers and address what’s causing them. Because here’s where that road leads when we don’t:

• Heart disease
• Diabetes
• Cancer
• Stroke
• Alzheimer’s
• Autoimmune conditions

Over 60% of Americans have at least one chronic condition. Nearly 40% have two or more. This is not bad luck—it’s a pattern of ignoring the whispers until they turn into war cries. If you desire to break the cycle that you most likely saw your parents, friends, and family go through, and want long-term health and well-being, it’s best to look underneath the surface even before any whispers start. The most important system in the body, the nervous system—or master control center—is often the source of dysfunction for many people.

Chiropractor using INSiGHT scan to identify nervous system stress and show patients when to see a chiropractor before symptoms escalate

The Nervous System: The Real Root

The nervous system runs the whole show. When it’s under stress, everything misfires—sleep, hormones, digestion, energy, mood. What causes that stress?

• Years of less than 7 hours of sleep
• Constant high stress
• Past injuries (yes, even that fender bender you forgot about)
• Lack of movement (not enough steps in a day)
• Poor nutrition that causes regular blood sugar spikes
• Living on caffeine and skipping rest

This is why nervous system chiropractic care isn’t just about “back pain.” At Lifespring Chiropractic, we use INSiGHT scans to actually measure nervous system stress. We find what x-rays and blood tests often miss—before the body is screaming. Then we use our TriChord Method™, a nervous system-based chiropractic strategy, to help restore balance. It’s about healing, not just “fixing.” After all, we are never broken or fixed, even though it’s easy to feel that way.

Our Choice: Pay Now or Pay Later

We always have a choice. We can pay now—by listening to our body, investing in our health, and making small changes early. Or we can wait. Wait until the cost is higher. Wait until symptoms become conditions. Wait until “managing it” becomes a full-time job. So back to the original question of when to see a chiropractor? When something feels off. When we’ve been tired for weeks and can’t explain why. When our gut says, “This isn’t normal,” even if your labs say everything’s fine.

If it’s been trying to tell you something, maybe now’s the time to listen. Start with one scan. Get a clear picture of where your nervous system really stands.
And if nothing else? You’ll stop guessing, and start knowing.
